
Kenyan Meat Pie
A flaky baked pastry filled with savoury minced meat, onions, and spices, popular as a snack or street food in Kenya.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 250 grams unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
Filling:
- 1/2 kg minced meat
- 3 onions finely chopped
- 5 garlic cloves minced
- Carrots (optional)
- Fresh coriander / dhania (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the dough:
- In a mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
Add butter:
- Add unsalted butter and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs.
Form the dough:
- Add eggs and milk.
- Mix and knead until a smooth dough forms.
Rest the dough:
- Cover the dough and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
Prepare the filling:
- Heat a pan and sauté onions and garlic until fragrant.
Cook the meat:
- Add minced meat and cook for about 15 minutes until well done.
Add vegetables:
- Add carrots and chopped coriander if using.
- Mix well and allow the filling to cool slightly.
Shape the pies:
- Roll the dough into thin chapati-like sheets and cut into circles.
- Place a spoonful of filling in the centre and fold to seal.
Bake:
- Place the pies on a baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 45–60 minutes until golden brown.
Serve:
- Remove from the oven and serve hot.

✔ Let the filling cool slightly before stuffing to prevent soggy dough.
