
Katlesi / Chops Bateta Champ
Crispy potato patties stuffed with spiced minced meat, shallow fried to golden perfection—an East African snack favorite.
Ingredients
- 8 potatoes boiled and mashed
- 250 grams minced beef (or mutton/chicken)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp onion diced
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- 1 tbsp green chilli (optional)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp coriander chopped
- 2 eggs
- salt to taste
- oil for frying
Instructions
Prepare potatoes:
- Boil potatoes in salted water until soft.
- Mash smoothly and keep aside.
Cook filling:
- In a pan, cook minced meat with black pepper, turmeric, cumin, and coriander until browned.
Add aromatics:
- Add onion, garlic, and chilli.
- Cook until onions turn soft and translucent.
Finish filling:
- Add lemon juice and mix.
- Turn off heat and let the mixture cool.
Shape patties:
- Take mashed potato and flatten into a small disc.
- Place a spoon of filling in the center, seal, and shape into a ball, then gently flatten.
Coat:
- Whisk eggs with a little salt.
- Dip each patty into the egg mixture.
Fry:
- Heat oil in a pan and shallow fry patties for about 2 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.
Serve:
- Serve hot with chutney, sauce, or tea.
