Dhokla is a vegetarian culinary dish that is found mainly in the Indian state of Gujarat and parts of adjacent states.

There are different kinds of dhokla prepared with different ingredients and ratios of chickpeas. Some of the popular kinds of dhoklas/dhokris are:

  • Khatta dhokri
  • Rasia dhokri
  • Moong dal dhokri
  • Khandavi dhokri
  • Cheese dhokri
  • Toor dal dhokri
  • Rava dhokri
  • Mixed dal dhokri
  • Green dhokri

 It is made with a fermented batter derived from lentils like Chickpea, Pigeon pea and Urad and rice. Dhokla can be eaten for breakfast, as a main course, as a side dish, or as a snack. It is also called as Dhokri.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 instant dhokra cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup desiccated coconut
  • 2-3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 10-15 curry leaves (limdo)
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil
  • Add mustard, cumin and fenugreek seeds and let them pop
  • Reduce heat; add curry leaves and then the dhokra pieces
  • Sprinkle the coconut, toss the pieces and cook for a few minutes
  • Garnish with coriander leaves
